A19 Easington to Peterlee Lighting Renewal

MSF recently completed a comprehensive lighting renewal scheme on the A19 between Easington and Peterlee.

The project involved removing over 150 lighting columns and replacing them with steel and passively safe columns and energy efficient LED lanterns. Ancilliary work also included the construction of 170x chambers, 7x HDD road crossings, two new feeder pillars, and 2.4km of new 16-50mm 5-core cable.

This project is MSF's second contract on the A19, following the successful completion of the Shearton to Dalton Piercy project delivered in 2023. The A19 operates under a 30-year Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) contract managed by Sir Robert McAlpine through Autolink Concessionaires.

This covers 120km of the A19/A168 road network from Dishforth in North Yorkshire to the Tyne Tunnel. The road carries over 98,000 vehicles daily with 5% more HGVs than the national average. It was voted England's best A-road in the 2023-24 Strategic Roads User Survey conducted by Transport Focus, achieving 85% overall satisfaction from over 9,000 road users surveyed.

MSF worked closely with National Highways to gain the geotechnical design approval for the HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) road crossings.

In contrast to conventional road crossings which involve digging up the carriageway, HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) road crossings avoid the need for road closures, ensuring traffic can continue to flow during the construction phase.

Furthermore, directional drilling avoids digging up the road surface and subsequent patch repairs that create weak spots in the surfacing which can have the potential to create a maintenance burden in the future.

The scale of this project also enabled MSF to take on an additional electrical apprentice in the Northern region, strengthening our own workforce and helping to alleviate the skills shortage in the wider industry.
