A1 East Ord Roundabout Lighting Renewal

MSF recently delivered a comprehensive street lighting and signage renewal scheme at the East Ord Roundabout on the A1, working directly for National Highways as principal contractor. The project involved replacing the street lighting, signage and all associated infrastructure around the roundabout on both the A1 and the outer ring road.

MSF got involved during the ECI phase to set the project up for success. With no existing electrical schematics available, our team collaborated directly with NH to identify key risks, verify service locations - including a major gas main and electrical feeds beneath the roundabout - and determine safe, practical positions for the new lighting columns and the extent of vacuum excavation required.

Through GPR surveys, trial holes, and service verification we confirmed congested utility areas early which enabled design and placement adjustments before construction. During ECI, the team also discovered 362m2 of surface reinstatement that were excluded from the original scope, and worked with National Highways to deliver these within the original programme timeframe.

MSF’s early interventions helped to devise a more time and cost-efficient programme which identified that 64% of the excavation be delivered by mechanical means, rather than 100% through vacuum excavation, as originally planned. These optimisations reduced delivery duration by 43 shifts (64%), saved £114k in associated costs (53%), and avoided 4tCO₂e emissions.

A Customer-First Approach to Night-time working

ROAD CROSSINGS

The scheme required a series of night closures to complete 11 road crossings. Night closures typically run from 8pm – 5am, and the team worked hard to minimise disturbance to local residents by scheduling noisy work at the beginning of each shift.

Local residents and businesses, including a nearby garden centre received regular updates through letter drops and direct engagement to minimise disruption and maintain a positive community relationship.

This considerate approach, combined with clear advance communication about the works programme, resulted in zero complaints from local stakeholders throughout the project.
