The Carbon Explorer Badge

The MSF Carbon Explorer Badge helps young people understand their own carbon footprint and take real, practical steps to reduce it, by tracking how they travel, making small everyday changes and measuring the impact of these changes over a few weeks.
Designed for youth groups such as Brownies and Scouts, we’ve adapted the activities so every age group can take part, from Rainbows and Squirrels drawing pictures of how they get to school, right through to Rangers and Explorers building their own digital carbon models.

370 young people across 15 groups have taken part so far — and this number is growing all the time. Every group that completes the badge gets added to the map below:
How it works
Activity Packs are available for:
  • Rainbows
  • Squirrels
  • Beavers
  • Brownies
  • Cubs
  • Scouts
  • Guides
  • Explorers
  • Rangers
The activities to gain the badge are tailored to each age group, but the basic framework is the same throughout:
  • Track how you travel
  • Choose to change one or more everyday activity to reduce or offset your carbon footprint
  • Record your progress over several weeks
  • Talk as a group about why it matters
  • Present what you’ve learned
