Nationwide LED Replacement Programme

MSF has been working on National Highway’s LED Replacement Programme across Areas 3, 4, 6/8 and 14, and has replaced over 4500 lanterns so far.

The LED replacement programme is the biggest LED light installation programme ever undertaken, involving a £132 million investment to replace over 50,000 lights before March 2027.

Lighting accounted for over half of National Highways’ corporate energy consumption in the 2021/22 financial year. This programme will ensure 70% of the lights on the SRN are environmentally friendly, which could mean using up to 65% less energy, depending on the wattage of the individual lamps replaced.

As a conscious contractor, we understand that our operations, and particularly the manufacturing processes of the components we install, have an impact on global carbon emissions. Therefore, as part of this scheme, we implemented a unique carbon offsetting programme, and also worked hard to ensure the lanterns we replaced were recycled in the most efficient way.

Area 4 Carbon Offsetting Programme

Through our work in Area 4, we planted trees to offset the majority of the combined carbon emissions of each individual lantern we replaced, along with the residual carbon used by the lanterns in the first year of operation.

Using data supplied by the lantern manufacturers, we calculated the amount of carbon used in the manufacture of the new lanterns and how much they would produce in their first year of operation. We then calculated the carbon emissions for MSF’s activities to complete the replacements. In Area 4, we replaced 698 lanterns over 14 schemes, with a combined total footprint of 70.1 tonnes of CO2.

Through Tree Nation, a carbon offsetting provider, we successfully offset 62.5 tonnes of CO2 by planting 1000 trees in Madagascar and 305 trees in Tanzania. The metals used in LED lanterns are found in both these countries, and mining activities have contributed to mass deforestation in recent years, so we chose to plant our forests here in a bid to give something back to the communities affected by mining and deforestation.

Recycling end of life equipment

Throughout the LED Replacement Schemes we’ve also worked closely with Holophane the manufacturer, and Recolight, a not-for-profit company specialising in lamp recycling, to ensure the lanterns we remove are recycled in the most efficient way, ensuring all re-usable and recyclable components make their way back into the circular economy.

As a nationwide highways contractor, we understand the importance of recycling end-of-life equipment, not just for legislative compliance, but because we recognise the finite nature of the materials used in lanterns.
