Chelmer Waterside Bridge

MSF recently delivered the electrical infrastructure package on Chelmer Waterside Bridge, which included the installation of a brand new architectural lighting system, and street lighting upgrades.

The architectural lighting system consists of 22 architectural uplighting units, and two underbridge units at either end of the pedestrian underpass. Custom metal trunking was also developed and installed by the MSF team to protect and conceal the cabling.

The programmable colour changing system enables the bridge to illuminate in different colours for special occasions such as Christmas, Easter, Chinese New Year and Diwali and is pre-programmed to run automatically until December 2035.

The bridge’s twin bowstring arches were manufactured off-site in eight separate pieces and then welded together onsite. This meant that the architectural lighting system had to be installed in situ, requiring a specialist MEWP with extended reach capabilities to extend out and around the bridge's metal barriers.

The MEWP required a suitably qualified operator, and to mitigate the risks of working at height and over water, the delivery team developed and tested a MEWP rescue plan.

Local Stakeholder Co-ordination

The street lighting element of this project presented unique challenges as the bridge crosses between two local authority areas (Essex & Chelmsford), each with different design standards and requirements for street lighting. MSF’s team worked closely with Graham Construction to co-ordinate these requirements and ensure compliance with both jurisdictions.
