M25 Emergency Refuge Areas

This project involved retrofitting 10 Emergency Refuge Areas on the all lane running sections of the M25, and was part of the Department for Transport’s action plan to improve Smart Motorway safety.
MSF installed all the signage for the ERA’s, and developed an alternative design for the foundations which saved money and reduced the programme. In addition, we installed two Stopped Vehicle Detection (SVD) Radar units.

Temporary and permanent solutions

During the construction phase it was imperative to the client that the Stopped Vehicle Detection ability remained in service to ensure all lanes could remain running, so MSF worked with the radar manufacturers and designers to provide a temporary and permanent solution for the radars to ensure SVD capability was maintained throughout.
